Resident Composer

Peter Michaels

Peter trained as a classical guitarist and in jazz theory. He began experimenting with electronic forms of composition, using samplers, synthesisers and digital recording techniques. Out of this has emerged a sound that is a mix of classical, jazz and electronics as well as integrating numerous styles that have been integral to his development such as rock, blues, folk, reggae and funk. He also plays Brazilian percussion such as the berimbau and cuica, as well as the tablas. Compositions range from synthesised soundscapes to fully orchestrated works.

He has worked on every Activated Image production, starting with the first outing of the company, an updated version of The Tempest at the 1998 Edinburgh Fringe. For this he wrote a drum 'n bass score, to great acclaim: "A thumpingly impressive soundtrack" (Three Weeks). Other productions he scored are dream.2000, Amy Evans' Strike, Latin! and The Straight Man. Recently he provided a soundtrack for The Principle of Motion, which used as its base a canon, which is a baroque composotional form reflecting the story's primary setting of 18th century Austria. This was combined with electronic pulses and dance rhythms, inspired by the themes of artificial intelligence and the movement of automata.

Other work for theatre has included Bloody Poetry at the Brockley Jack, and The Monument for the opening season of the Finborough in Chelsea. Student work includes Spring Awakening and Blood Wedding at Manchester University, Possible Worlds, The Erl King and 4.48 Psychosis at Mountview Academy, and Chuck Palahniuk's Survivor at King's College. Peter also writes for film and radio, with recent credits including Old World which appeared as the Saturday play on BBC Radio 4, and The White Horses of Lipizza, a 60 minute documentary for the National Geographic. Short films credits are Frontline (Evil Pigeon), Between the City and the Sea (Violent Violet), Petal (Jack and Jude), Loophole (Intermezzo), The Art of Flirting (Tzunami) and The Last Supper (Intermezzo).

Peter has played in many bands, including a stint as a keyboardist in a touring soul originals band, piano in many jazz groups, bass in the rock band Madee, guitar in his late teens in the group Amber, and most recently electric piano in the experimental live electronica band, Blue Rinse. Based in Manchester, they combined layers of loops with live bass, guitar and keyboards, with influences from blues, gypsy music, drum 'n' bass, reggae and orchestral soundscapes. He has made film sequences for multimedia productions including The White Devil, Antigone and Survivor. He has trained as a martial artist, studying Capoeira, a Brazilian mix of dance, gymnastics and fighting techniques, as well as Jeet Kune Do, Bruce Lee's own potpourri of eastern and western martial arts including boxing, fencing and Wing Chun kung fu.
